Solution 29090: Stopping, Breaking or Ending a TI-Basic Program on Texas Instruments Graphing Calculators

How do I stop, break or end a TI-Basic Program on Texas Instruments Graphing Calculators?

For Texas Instruments TI-Basic programs it may be necessary to stop, break or end the TI-Basic Program if it becomes unresponsive or is taking an extended amount of time to complete a calculation.

The steps to stop, break and end a program are universal over all calculators that can be programed with TI-Basic Programs.

To stop any TI-Basic Program press and hold down on the [ON] key for about 2-5 seconds and the error message [Break] should appear on the screen. This indicates the program was stopped and the program is no longer running. This is useful in debugging programs as it allows you to run TI-Basic programs without fear of it locking up your calculator and requiring you to do a reset. Below are the screens that should be displayed on the calculator once the program has been stopped:

TI-83 Plus Family and TI-84 Plus Family:

 TI-89 Family, TI-92 Plus and Voyage 200:

 TI-Nspire Family:

 TI-Nspire Family Software:

• Windows®: Hold down the [F12] key and press [Enter] repeatedly.
• Mac®: Hold down the [F5] key and press [Enter] repeatedly.

For further information please see your calculator's respective guidebook.
